V. RICHELIEU™ NEWSROOM – From Tuesday, July 21- Saturday, July 25, 2026, V. Richelieu™ Instruments and Vermont Violins travel to Georgetown, Texas, to attend and support the prestigious Greater Austin Suzuki Institute 2026.
Early this morning at 5:00 AM, Kathy, owner of Vermont Violins and V. Richelieu™ Instruments, boarded a plane headed south for Texas. Her destination: the Greater Austin Suzuki Institute, where students, families, and master educators gather for an intensive annual convention celebrating string pedagogy and collaborative music-making.
V. Richelieu™ has been a proud, long-standing participant in this gathering for many years. Flying straight from Vermont to Austin, we bring our hand-crafted V. Richelieu™ violins and violas directly into the hands of young artists. Texas has an extraordinary, vibrant culture of fostering music, and sharing our Green Mountain workshop instruments in a totally different context—where they are exceptionally well received—is always a true highlight of our year.

The Genius of Shinichi Suzuki and Collaborative Learning
The Greater Austin Suzuki Institute brings together students ranging from early childhood through pre-college, alongside teachers taking advanced training courses in the Suzuki method.
The method was created by master pedagogue Shinichi Suzuki, who made a profound observation watching early childhood development: young children manage the infinitely fine, intricate motor skills needed to manipulate vocal cords and speak complex languages long before they master larger macro-physical skills. He realized this incredible feat was driven by a child's natural desire to emulate their parents. By applying that same observational drive to stringed instruments, Suzuki proved that young children could excel at playing music with natural grace and deep emotional understanding.
While Suzuki instruction relies on a carefully crafted, sequence-driven series of repertoire books, true Suzuki training extends far beyond the page. Institutes like Austin offer an invaluable space where students and teachers gather to immerse themselves in:

One of our favorite traditions at Suzuki institutes is teaming up with faculty viola instructors for dedicated "Viola for Violinists" workshops.
When young violinists are first introduced to the viola, they are often given cheap, fractional violins re-strung with C-strings, resulting in a thin, nasal sound that frustrates their ears. At the Austin institute, we provide students with authentic, custom-proportioned fractional V. Richelieu violas.
Because these instruments are built with proper body air volumes and precision graduations, young players immediately hear and feel the rich, dark, and powerful acoustic voice unique to the viola. Experiencing that tonal difference on a well-designed instrument is so compelling that we routinely watch passionate young violinists fall in love and convert to the viola right on the spot!
