V. Richelieu Attends 2026 New England Suzuki Institute
V. RICHELIEU NEWSROOM – From June 28th through July 4th, 2026, V. Richelieu Instruments and Vermont Violins will officially travel to Waterville, Maine, to attend and support the prestigious New England Suzuki Institute (NESI). Hosted annually on the pristine campus of Colby College, this regional milestone serves as a premier immersive incubator for Suzuki-method students, families, and elite string educators from across the United States.
The week-long, overnight institute provides an intensive environment where approximately 130 young violin, viola, cello, piano, and guitar players engage in collaborative play experiences, masterclasses, and specialized ensemble workshops. Guided by a faculty composed of the nation's most regarded Suzuki instructors, the festival culminates in nightly student recitals, immersive enrichment classes, and family-centered musical performances.

Lowering the Acoustic Barrier for the "Violin to Viola" Shift
A core highlight of V. Richelieu’s presence this year addresses a recurring challenge in youth orchestral pedagogy: introducing young violinists to the depth, alto clef, and wider physical proportions of the viola.
To support the institute's dedicated Violin-to-Viola Workshop, V. Richelieu is officially providing the use of 14 premium, bench-calibrated violas for the duration of the camp.
Historically, young players exploring the viola are handed heavy, poorly graduated, or awkwardly cut instruments that strain small muscle groups and deaden bow response. By equipping these workshops with meticulously carved, ergonomically optimized V. Richelieu violas, we ensure that young violinists experience an immediate, effortless physical transition and an authentic, rich alto timbre. Providing students with world-class tools during their formative exploratory windows is foundational to our workshop's pedagogical mission.
The V. Richelieu Exhibition: On-Site Trials and Fittings
Throughout the week, one of the owners, Kathy Reilly, will maintain an active exhibition space on the Colby College campus, showcasing our benchmark line of V. Richelieu instruments. The collection will be fully accessible to students, parents, and attending faculty for:
Precision Tonal Trials: Experience firsthand how our proprietary varnishes and precision graduations alter projection and responsiveness.
Acoustic Rentals & Purchasing: Select premium fractional and full-sized instruments backed by our high standards.
Luthier-Guided Ergonomic Fittings: Ensure developing students are paired with correct setups, chinrests, and shoulder heights to prevent repetitive strain injuries before they begin.

Expanding Beyond the Green Mountains: Finding the Musical Tribe
V. Richelieu's presence in Maine is part of a broader, deliberate national commitment to supporting youth string education. Our team routinely travel to far-flung educational gatherings across the United States—from Washington State to Texas—to invest directly in regional string development.
These multi-day, immersive camps are critical to the creative and social evolution of young musicians. They lift students out of the isolation of local practice rooms, allowing them to play alongside national peers who share their intense discipline and artistic focus. It is an essential discovery process where children find their musical "tribe," learning how their individual voices fit into the greater American string playing landscape.
We love these events for the raw positive energy they inject into the craft, the opportunity to gather vital real-world feedback from top educators, and the privilege of sharing the advanced lutherie concepts we develop in our Vermont workshops with a national audience. Lifelong friendships are forged in the ensemble halls of Colby College, and our team looks forward to reuniting with old colleagues and welcoming new artists to the V. Richelieu family this summer.
